Kitesurf Travel Guide to Madagascar

Everything you need to know to plan your dream kitesurf trip to Diego Suarez.

Why is Madagascar a world-class destination?

Located in northern Madagascar, the Diego Suarez region (Antsiranana) is home to what many consider one of the best kitesurf spots in the world: Sakalava Bay.

Unlike often overcrowded European spots or those at the mercy of unpredictable weather, Sakalava offers incredible wind statistics thanks to the Varatraza, a powerful trade wind that blows non-stop from April to November.

When to go?

The season runs from mid-April to end of November. During this period, you can expect wind (between 20 and 35 knots) 9 days out of 10. The water is warm (26-28°C), a simple lycra or shorty is enough.

Practical Info

  • How to get there: International flight to Antananarivo (TNR), then domestic flight to Diego Suarez (DIE).
  • Visa: E-visa or visa on arrival at the airport (approximately €35 for 30 days).
  • Currency: Malagasy Ariary (MGA). Bring euros to exchange locally.
  • Health: No mandatory vaccinations, antimalarial treatment recommended outside the dry season.
